Pull and be Damned

The Pull and be Damned messabout in Anacortes was fantastic.

I am a member of several small boating clubs.  The Coots, the TSCA, the Pocket Yachters.  They all have a slightly different focus, ranging from inexpensive and experimental boats to honoring authentic traditional craft.  From production trailerable cruisers to homebuilts. From power to sail.

But this weekend was my first opportunity to spend a weekend with the Old Anacortes Rowing and Sailing Society OARSS.  The beauty of their boats and their seamanship skills left me awestruck. From deftly launching their craft by crane, to sailing in reverse to make a perfect mooring at a dock, camp cruising, clothesline anchoring, traveling anywhere and everywhere by sail and oar only.  They even rescued a stranded aircraft once.  With just a glance at the sea, they knew how the tides and currents would swirl around the myriad islands that day.  I had nothing I could offer as I spent the weekend in humble admiration of their seamanship skills.

It was also a weekend of many other firsts for my son Tim and I.  The first first (ugh) was Ellies launching by crane, deftly done by James McMullen (in the red vest) while I nervously tried to assist and learn anyway I could.

Relieved at not making a big splash, I headed over and tied up to Small Boat Dock, where the messabout was to be held.  There was my second first (ugh).  I had to rig Ellie on the water.  It took about twice as long as usual, but was a success.  Fortunately there was flat water and no wind.

One by one the remaining boats arrived.  The messabout officially began at 10:00.  Several boats were available for anyone to borrow.  My third first was testing one of the Gentry skin on frame whitehalls. Here are some videos of the event:

The James led a group aboard Island Star, a 4-oared racing gig.  A replica of the worlds fastest boat in 1824.

After the messabout, most of the group headed over to nearby Saddlebag Island for an overnighter.  Ive never been to Saddlebag.  Another first!

And yet another first. While there, I got to try out my new Kelly Kettle.  The Kelly Kettle is a cookstove that uses sticks, twigs, and dried leaves for fuel.  It will boil water and heat food at the same time, very quickly.  It also fries and has a BBQ grill.  I used it twice and love it already.

The next morning, the sail and oarsmen set out early for a circumnavigation of Guemes Island.  Simeon Baldwin, with his SCAMP Noddy and I decided to spend the day sailing together instead.
 
And the end portion of this video is really pretty.
This also gave me an opportunity to fully test my tiller locking device.  It works perfectly.
We spent many thoroughly enjoyable hours sailing side by side in the warm sunshine and gentle breeze.  After a while we took a break and hiked over to my favorite bar and grill, The Rockfish, for lunch. The sail and oar group returned from their circumnavigation so it was time to head back to the crane.  Once again, The James came to my rescue, expertly extracting Ellie safely from the water.  Here is a video of Noddy taking flight.

The Greenland Umiak

"In the Greenland legends the umiak appears almost as often as the kayak," writes H.C. Petersen, in Skinboats of Greenland. "It was part of the daily life."

The umiak was used throughout and beyond the North American Arctic, from eastern Siberia and Alaska to Greenland. (I wrote about the angyapik, the umiak of St. Lawrence Island, in the Bering Strait, here.) It was the vehicle used by the Inuits to colonize the Thule region of northwestern Greenland (and from thence, the rest of the island), and there is good reason to believe that an early version was used by the islands first inhabitants, the Dorset culture.

Petersen writes, "I enjoy following the trail of the Inuit ancestors along the long coast of Greenland, on the mainland as on the islands. It is just as difficult to manage without a sea-going vessel in Greenland today (i.e., 1986) as it was 4500 years ago. The land is scarred by deep fiords (sic) and off the mainland there are extensive archipelagos. To survive, a family vessel is needed, especially as the greatest part of ones subsistence must be taken from the sea."

Often referred to as the "womans boat" to distinguish it from kayaks, which were used exclusively by men, the umiak was really the Greenland familys boat, for its capacity (or "burthen" -- what a fine word!) was essential to the Inuits nomadic lifestyle. True, when moving from place to place, the men might paddle their kayaks in convoy with the umiaks, as shown in the top illustration. But without the umiak, there would have been no transportation for the young, the aged, or cargo of any sort -- to say nothing of the women who rowed and steered them. And umiaks were used by men, for hunting whales.

Greenland umiaks ranged from five meters to more than ten meters in length. Until the island was colonized by Europeans, who made sawn lumber available, the umiak frame was built entirely of driftwood, since no trees grew on the island. Working without metal tools or fasteners, the Inuit developed a strong, flexible, lightweight structure characterized by impressive woodworking and thoughtful design. The illustration below shows the complex joinery between the stem or sternpost and the keel and chine stringers. (Sophisticated hook scarfs were also common, and were often used instead of the mortise joint between the stem and keel as shown.) Fastening at the stem/sternpost was done with pegs of bone, tusk, or antler, and/or by lashing with strips of sealskin or baleen.

Almost all other joints were lashed with sealskin strips. As shown below, the lashings were fed through holes bored in the members, in order to prevent the lashings from creating bulges beneath the skin cover. Boring these dozens of holes, using only a bow drill with a bone point, required an immense expenditure of labor, and would only have been done for a compelling reason. While it would have made the boat quieter and marginally faster through the water, the main reason was to protect the skin from abrasion.

The umiaks cover was made of sealskin -- anywhere from seven to more than 30 skins were required, depending upon the size and species of seal, and the length of the boat. The cover was quite fragile, especially when wet, and the boat had to be removed from the water every day to prevent the cover from becoming totally waterlogged and disintegrating. Although great care was taken to lift the boat and avoid dragging it, some abrasion was inevitable, so the elimination of "hard spots" in the skin was essential to preventing the premature formation of leaks.

After a fabulous breakfast of exotic fruits, coffee, cakes and cheeses, John and I took a bus to Pedra Azul -- The Blue Stone Park.

The Blue Stone is a massive granite rock, 1800m (5400ft) high, formed by volcanic eruption and is called blue because it’s surface is covered with a blue-green algae that turns blue when the sun hits it. The rock has also many bromeliads growing on it.

Actually, it was quite a long hike!
What made the tour more interesting was Paulo, a lawyer traveling from Sao Paulo. His only interest in this region was the Intraterrestrial creatures (intelligent beings who live under the Earths surface) that live under Domingos Martins, the town we were staying, but their energy center is the Pedra Azul. He has been following these creatures around the world and this is their biggest settlement in Brazil.

We arrived in Pedra Azul, had some lunch at a working-mans cafe, and set off to reach the rock. Pressed for time, since we had to take the 4pm bus back to Domingos Martins, we took a 2km taxi ride to the rock. We arrived together with Paulo and took a guided tour together.

The one hour tour was very nice, besides listening to Paulo’s stories about the energy fields and the intraterrestrial civilization below our feet, we learned quite a lot about the environment, park preservation, and it’s story. We even saw a tucan.

It was an intense moment when Paulo was able to touch the rock and absorb it’s energy. He had been waiting for that moment for a long time.

John shared his version of the intraterrestrials based on Dr. Who monsters called the Silurians. The Silurians were an advanced reptilian race who had ruled the Earth during the Silurian Era -- the time of the Dinosaurs. They had seen the approach of the great asteroid that would impact the Earth and kill off most of the life on the planet, and so had moved their cities far underground, to survive the catastrophe. Somehow, they went into hibernation, and were only awoken when the mammalian rodents which had scurried between the feet of the Dinosaurs had grown up to take over the world and start drilling for oil.    Obviously, they didnt like that...

Some angry Silurians

Paulo was very impressed and debated that the story might just be a true one. He also shared the fact (known only to a few) that governments of several powerful countries have been dealing with these inner earth inhabitants for a long time, to prevent them from destroying the human race and taking over the above ground world. It was very hard for me to keep a straight face while translating these stories between them.

The tour guide looked a bit scared a couple of times... here she is, in the middle of a jungle, with three (make it two) crazy people discussing intra and extra terrestrial inhabitants. After the tour we walked back into town and took the bus back to Domingos Martins. Tomorrow, Paulo will change hotels. He will stay at the Pedra Azul city to be able to observe the flying saucers that come at night to feed on the stone’s energy.

Monkeying around...
It was a cold and rainy night and we warmed up with comfort food at a German restaurant. Back in the hotel, the hostess called our room at 9pm to make sure we had got “home” safely. That was so sweet.

Head Scratched Protection Added

After some discussions with my fellow boat builder Ted, it would appear that the side wood strips at the rear of several boats like ours have been added not necessarily as splash rails but as protection against bumps. The shape of the side of our boats at the rear makes bottom edge of the boat prominent and susceptible to getting bumped and marred. A rubstrip along the shearline would be ineffective at the rear. However, since the boat side twists, getting something to fit takes a bit of head scratching.









I decided to build some stationary assists for fitting these bumper strips. I used the 2x6s from the forms and cut vertical pieces at the planned front and rear height and connected with a stringer at floor level. I then split them in half on the table saw so I could make one for each side of the boat. They were attached to the ping-pong table and then belt clamped underneath the boat to bring the verticals tight to the boat.





A 2" wide board was cut to rough length and placed up to the side of the boat. It was placed so it gapped about 3/8" at the front and a like amount at the rear. Then using a scrap piece of wood about 1/4" thick and 1 1/2" square, I sanded a chisel edge so it would ride up against the boat along the board. I drilled a small hole 3/8" in from the edge to allow a pencil point to project through. I laid this piece flat on the board and pushed it up against the boat side and traced a line on top of the board, and then repeated this on the underneath side.





I then took the board to the band saw and cut a line in from the edge every four inches and rotate it as needed to cut to the marked lines top and bottom. Then I set the band saw table to the initial angle needed and cut off four inches at a time and readjusted the table angle as I went along. This cut a spiral shaped surface along a curved line of sorts. Then a trial fit and some filing - some more filing - sanding - filing - and it got close to fitting - sort of.



Then duct tape was put on the side of the boat so epoxy would not adhere. Some scraps were put underneath with more duct tape to catch any epoxy drips. A batch of well thickened epoxy using the brown fairing filler was put on the board and clamped to the boat and allowed to cure. It took some mallet hits to get the board lose after cure but it appears to now have a surface that matches the boat. Filing of top and bottom sides of the board should clean up the excess epoxy.







This last picture shows the epoxied surface, which is now a curved line with a spiral twist - you can kind of see that in the photo.



Ill do the other side and then determine the final shape or line to cut the outside of the board. It will probably end up being a straight taper - narrow at the front and gradually getting wider toward the rear of the boat. I decided to reinforce the sides at each screw attachment point with another piece of 1/4" plywood. To keep it simple and light, a flycutter was used to cut some 1.5" diameter "washers" from 1/4" plywood. These were epoxied in place on the inside of the boat and held in place with a screw and a temporary duct taped block on the outside of the boat. I am not going to permanently attach these rails until the boat is out of the basement. Hate to add any unaccounted for width.

After a bit a trying different lines, a straight line did not work as it made the forward foot or so look like it bulged out due to the shape of the boat side. So I used a strip of plywood to create a curved line and cut it on the band saw and sanded out the bumps and saw lines it until I had a smooth surface.

I plan on putting a 1/2" or 2/4" wide stainless steel rubstrip along the outer edge.

Tub Boats

I had the pleasure of attending a talk by Doug Brooks at Carpenters Boat Shop in Pemaquid, Maine, last month. Doug is a highly accomplished builder of both Japanese and Western traditional boat type replicas, whom I wrote about previously. He spoke mainly about the building of the Japanese tub boat, known as a taraibune, and about the state of traditional boat building and the apprenticeship system in Japan. Ill try to get to the big picture later, and will concentrate on the taraibune itself here. Content comes from Dougs talk, and from his book, The Tub Boats of Sado Island: A Japanese Craftsmans Methods.

Taraibune are used for nearshore fishing and seaweed collecting. (Although the term taraibune is recognized throughout Japan, on Sado itself, the boats are called hangiri. ) In spite of their ancient appearance, they date from only the middle of the 19th century, according to Toshio Sato, who wrote the history chapter in Dougs book. Prior to that, dugouts and plank-built boats were used to collect the rich shallow-water sea life around the southern tip of Sado Island, but in 1802 an earthquake changed the areas topography, opening up a multitude of narrow fissures in the rocks along the shore into which it was impractical or dangerous to take long, narrow boats. Derived directly from the barrels in which miso is brewed, tub boats proved to be adept at navigating these narrow waterways. Indeed, they can be easily spun in their own length.

Taraibune are traditionally propelled by sculling with a single paddle passed through a simple rope loop at the "bow" of the boat. (The ends of the oval boat are identical, so it is this simple oarlock that defines the bow.) In one village, taraibune fishermen now use small outboards, but interestingly, the stern-mounted engine is not used for steering: this is still done with the paddle, serving as a bow-mounted rudder. In the other villages where taraibune are used, the paddle still reigns for both steering and propulsion.

A key tool of the taraibune angler is the glass-bottomed box which is floated alongside the boat. This enables him (or more frequently, her) to clearly see the bottom in shallow water to identify likely prey or harvest. A variety of long-handled tools is trailed behind the boat -- to collect the fish, shellfish, or vegetation at hand.

An interesting analog of the taraibune is the Chinese hu-chuan or "Kettle Boat." This is perfectly round, not oval like the taraibune and, according to G.R.G. Worcester, in The Junks and Sampans of the Yangtze, it is paddled from the side, not over the bow (although I cannot imagine how this would make the boat go anywhere other than round and round, in place). Only about 3 in diameter, the hu-chuan is used to tend cultivated edible water plants in flooded fields.

Sampans in Hong Kong Harbor

Friend John Meader spent a couple days in Hong Kong recently and kindly allowed me to use these photos of the sampans he observed in the harbor.  All photos may be clicked for an enlarged view.

BUDGET


Before anything else, you need to set a certain amount that you are willing to spend to build the boat. This would determine many factors that goes into building the boat. It will determine the size, design and the materials youll be using to build a jon boat.

Building your own boat is generally cheaper than buying one but you still need to allocate a definite amount and stick to it with the rest of the planning.

MATERIALS

There are generally four types of jon boat in terms of the materials used. These are aluminum, polyethylene, fiberglass and wood.

You have to decide which material you will use to build a jon boat keeping in mind the budget as well as whats suitable for your needs.

Aluminum are generally the sturdiest ofall mtype and is used especially when you use the boat in rocky areas. So this is good for river fishing.

Polyethelyne is also a very good alternative if sturdiness and durability is high on your list of priorities. However, I personally have an issue with using polyethylene as constant dragging of the boat on dry grounds can damage polyethylene boats.

Fiberglass is good for fishing near sandbars. But it is not the cheapest of materials to buy.

Wood is the cheapest of all materials and to build a wooden jon boat would require some woodworking skills. The thing with wooden jon boats is you need to coat the wood well using special paints to add integrity to the structure and to prevent rot.

DESIGN

Most jon boats generally have a flat or near flat hull thus limiting its use to still or calm waters. However, for your purposes, you may customize some of its features including the motors you use, if you plan of adding any. You also need to determine the size of the boat and the number of decks and the capacity of the boat.

The definite dimension and measurement of the boat should be in place before starting the building process itself. And for this youll be needing a jon boat building plan.

A good building plan should take you through the whole process of it step-by-step. It should have a complete list of materials needed so you can have it prepared beforehand and see if it fits with your budget.
